Hey there,
I don't know if this is a spoiler to SoM Plus (perhaps a small one).

But I love how the dwarves now reappear in the Dwarf Village after the Tropicallo fight.
That is amazing. I guess without that addition.. one might think they died in that fight. But this is a much nicer outcome.

Was that something that Squaresoft always intended to happen (have the dwarves reappear) - but there was a glitch preventing it?
Or did you manually program them back in?

Did you also have to rescript what they said after the fight?
It feels like most of is original text, except maybe the dwarf in the top-right who says, '.. You beat Tropicallo but I can still hear faint ramblings' -
I can't tell whether that is original or not.

Thanks..!

Hey so you finally found your way to the forum :p

So adding the dwarf back was a suggestion of someone who streamed version 1 of the hack. I thought it was a good idea, the village feels very empty once Watts also leaves.

I don't think they were planned to come back as most of them needed updates in their dialogues.

- This is the village of Dwarfs.

This was the easiest one to restore. (I will fix it)

- My, oh my! You from the surface? A while ago a Sprite's child washed down here. It's doing magic tricks.

I had to cut the end for this one.

You can hear rumblings from somewhere even deeper than here? Sounds like digging.

This is the one I modified. First I think he is supposed to hear Tropicallo, then I make him hear the Scorpion army and after that he just says "What a mess!".

There are so many small earthquakes! There...again!

This is about Tropicallo so I did not restore this one.

Underground Palace? That's been burried for ages.

This one also gets outdated so I didn't keep him.

So yeah, most of them don't stay relevant after Tropicallo, so the easiest way was to suppress them.

Thanks for that Tomm. That's right - finally got here to the forum after months of saying I would 😅
If I'm reading that right, sounds like one of them changes their text after their Scorpion Army as well, that's super clever how you can add timed text events like that.. kinda mind-blowing actually.

I might be diving a bit too deep, here..
But if the dwarves weren't originally programmed to 'come back' after the Tropicallo fight - does that imply that they were intended to disappear?
Like the game set a 'flag' or something after the Tropicallo fight so they wouldn't show up?

You can use flags to tell NPCs what they have to say and when they have to appear. It just requires multiple dialogues creation.

Concerning the dwarves they are all on the flag attributed to Watts (First meeting, shortcut scene...) and Tropicallo fight. They appear between 0 value and 3, the ground shaking when Tropicallo arrives. Then Tropicallo fight is on a duplicate map so they had no need to suppress them for this. I think it was just to save space in the room and not having to add new dialogues.

Well, that's pretty amazing.
So it's absolutely conclusive then - in the original, the dwarves not being in Dwarf Village after the Tropicallo fight was not a glitch. It was intended that way. And the fact that the Tropicallo fight is on a duplicate map means that they weren't forced to remove the dwarves for the fight.

It's kinda strange that it ended up this way now that I think about it. It sounds like the original devs were pretty tight on ROM space.
But I'm grateful for that gem who suggested putting them back in.

Dwarf Village is a much nicer place now.
I don't have to consider the possibility that all the dwarves were killed by Tropicallo ..!
It was a very thoughtful change to make. Thanks for the reply.

Indeed there's not a lot of space on the original ROM, thankfully you can increase the ROM size for romhacks.

I always thought the dwarves ran away, kid Tomm wasn't ok with them dying. 😋
